What can our horses eyes tell us about their health?

Eyes are often referred to as “the windows to the soul”. Iridology is the method of assessing horse health by analysing the fibre structure and colour of the iris of the eye. Each part of the horse’s body is mapped out on well defined areas of the iris, which enables the horse’s constitution to be assessed, showing organ strengths and weaknesses, as well as the inherited make-up of the horse.

What is Iridology?

Iridology is a non-invasive technique using a torch, a magnifying glass and a camera to look into your horses irides. Iridology can show genetic strengths and weaknesses, behavioural and physical traits. Levels of inflammation, toxicity, acidity and the status of systems and organs giving an overview of the health of the body.

“It’s an amazing skill to see into a horse’s health through the eye”

Iridology is very new to me, but I am always open to any alternative way to look at my pony’s health to try to help him. He has very complicated health issues and they are proving to be a huge challenge for anybody to get to the bottom of.
I’ve been treating him with herbs and having veterinary tests but unfortunately, the tests available don’t cover some of the symptoms so I have to rely on my gut feelings and knowing my pony well… I was suspicious of certain things causing his problems – like his gut, liver, lymphatic system, immune system. I sent Auriol photos of his eyes and she did a consult online, I was quite impressed that the eye reading highlighted most of my suspicions, I did not tell Auriol anything about my pony before the reading, other than she knew he was struggling with his health. “It was really useful to get an insight into some of her issues”

Auriol came to see my mare Matilda and have a look at her eyes. After a general assessment, Auriol asked me lots of questions about Matilda’s personality, her management, diet and any issues I have with her. She is a very sweet mare and a lovely allrounder but she can suffer from a sensitive digestive system and has had sarcoids in the past. We took some pictures of her eyes and Auriol used her chart to map Matilda’s health. We found that Matilda’s spleen hasn’t always functioned well which could have been the cause of her sarcoids, and it was suggested that we try certain ingredients in her feed to help flush it through, and to up the canter work to keep things healthy. She is currently sarcoid-free. It was also noticed that she is stoic and an internaliser so I keep a close eye on her being stressed and unhappy. Auriol also suggested some changes to her diet and supplements to help with some of her issues. It was really useful to get an insight into some of Matilda’s issues and see how they came out in her physical health, and be given lots of advice and suggestions for how I can support her.

“He’s back to looking like a normal healthy horse again!”

I have never been much of a believer in anything alternative, but all I can say is that having followed Auriol’s advice Parac returned to a normal healthy happy horse again!
My retired dressage horse, Parac, was losing weight, and all conventional veterinary procedures didn’t seem to have much effect. Auriol assessed Parac for me with Iridology, which revealed some undiagnosed gastric problems for which she suggested a recovery programme. This involved some herbal remedies and a change to his feeding protocol. Parac put on weight fairly quickly and as I said already, returned to looking like a normal healthy horse again.
